Philips OLED810: what it ships with and what can come off

Let us start with the warning, because it is the one that saves the most time: not every Philips runs Google TV.

In the same range and from the same year, the OLED810 runs Google TV and the OLED760 runs Titan OS, which is Philips' own system and has nothing to do with it. They look alike in the name, they sit in the same shop on the same shelf, and they carry different systems. If you try to apply what is on this page to an OLED760, you will not find a single one of the names listed here, because on that one there is no ADB to speak of.

Check on the set itself which one you have first. Then carry on reading.

What it is, in two lines

A 2025 OLED with an OLED EX panel, 120 Hz native and VRR up to 144 Hz, governed by the ninth-generation P5 processor. On the 65-inch model, peaks of around 1,300 nits have been measured in Filmmaker mode and 1,500 in the brightest mode; full screen, 215 nits, which is normal on an OLED and worth knowing if the room gets a lot of light.

Philips declares 1,500 nits, but only for the 55, 65 and 77-inch models. The 42 and the 48 do not get there. The same goes for the sound: 70 W across almost the whole range, 50 W on the 42-inch. Buying the small one thinking it is the same television, only smaller, is a mistake that costs money.

Inside, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, of which around 17 or 18 remain free once Google TV is set up. That is comfortable.

Ambilight is not an app

This is worth saying because it is the reason many people buy Philips, and because it raises doubts every time somebody considers cleaning the set up.

Ambilight —the rear lights that follow what is on screen— lives in the firmware, below Google TV. It is not a package on the list, it does not appear when you enumerate apps, and no clear-out you carry out can spoil it.

There is a phone app to control it, and there are integrations with third-party lighting systems that are apps and can be removed. But Ambilight itself, the one that comes on when you switch the television on, will still be there whatever you do.

How to tell whether this page is about your set

Under Settings → System → About you will find the model and the Android version, which here is 14. With ADB connected, getprop ro.product.model and getprop ro.build.version.release give you the same thing without going through the menus.

And that second figure is what settles the doubt raised at the start: if your television does not say it runs Android, it is not running Google TV, and this page is not yours.

What ships on it

Google's. The launcher (com.google.android.tvlauncher), the recommendation engine (com.google.android.tvrecommendations), voice search (com.google.android.katniss) and the services (com.google.android.gms). It is the layer that decides what you see when the set comes on.

Philips'. The manufacturer's own apps: the setup assistant, some content tool, and the Ambilight integrations with external lighting. The exact names change between firmware versions, so list your own rather than copying a list off the internet.

Everybody else's. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and the rest arrive installed under a commercial agreement, not because the television needs them. On many units they also have a dedicated button on the remote.

What comes off without much thought

The streaming apps you do not use. With 32 GB, space is not the problem, but everything else is: they update themselves, they appear in the recommendation row and they talk to their servers. If you subscribe tomorrow, they reinstall from the store in two minutes.

The free content channels that fill the home screen are the second obvious case.

What to look at first

The recommendation engine. Removing it leaves a clean home screen, but it also empties the "continue watching" row, which in a house with several people is missed.

And before touching any package, go into the television's own privacy settings and look at what it is sharing. A fair amount can be cut back from there, with no ADB and no risk at all.

What not to touch

Google Play services. They are the foundation of the store, of the accounts and of a good part of the apps. Without them the set boots and little else.

The launcher, as long as you have no other one installed and working. A television with no launcher comes on to a black screen, and fixing that with the remote alone is a great deal harder than having thought about it beforehand.

Anything starting with com.android. that you cannot identify: com.android.systemui is the system interface and com.android.settings is the settings app itself.

And anything to do with HDMI or with the control of external devices. On this model it matters more than usual, because only HDMI 1 and 2 are 2.1 at 48 Gbps; the other two are 2.0, and the eARC is on number 2. If you also have a console, that port is doing two jobs.

What you actually notice

The home screen stops proposing series from services you do not have. The content notifications disappear. And the television answers the remote slightly sooner in the first seconds after switching on.

What does not change: the panel, the brightness, the P5's processing, the 120 Hz, the sound or Ambilight. None of that depends on the apps installed.

All of this comes undone

Nothing explained here is permanent. Packages disabled over ADB come back with one command, and a factory reset returns the television to exactly the state it left the box in.

Nothing here touches the system: you are only telling the set not to load something that was already installed.

If you own one

The app list from your own OLED810, exactly as the set reports it, is the one thing missing to close its entry in the directory. And if you have the OLED760, send that one too: it serves to document, with data, how two televisions that look identical in the shop actually differ.

Everything here applies to a device you own, and every removal is reversible. The limits of this project: What we do and do not do
