TCL P6K: what it ships with and what can come off

The P6K is TCL's entry rung with Google TV: a 4K set without QLED, an HVA panel at 60 Hz and some 270 quoted nits. It is a television for an ordinary room with the blinds half down, and at its price it does what it promises.

What it does not do is explain itself well, and that is the part worth telling before anything else.

When the manufacturer's own sheets disagree

While preparing this page we ran into something that does not happen with other models: TCL's own official spec sheets say different things depending on the country.

The continental European page for this television declares HDR10 and nothing more. The British page for the same model adds HDR10+. A distributor sheet in Italy also mentions HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Sound goes the same way: some sheets say 20 W and others 24 W, and Dolby Atmos appears on some and not on others. Even the list of screen sizes contradicts itself within the same website.

We cannot settle it from here. There may be different product variants under the same name —common enough in this bracket— or the sheets may simply be badly maintained. What we can tell you is that you should take nothing you read on a website for granted until you have checked it on your own set, and how to check it.

How to know what you actually have

For HDR, the reliable route is not the spec sheet: it is the television itself. Play a film or a series you know is in Dolby Vision or HDR10+ and watch the format indicator that appears on screen as it starts, or go into the picture settings while it plays. If your set supports it, it will tell you.

For the rest, Settings → System → About shows the model, the Android version and the available storage. With ADB connected, getprop ro.product.model and df -h /data give the model and the free space without walking through menus.

TCL sets running Google TV usually report themselves on the BeyondTV platform, a name that covers several screen sizes and several retail references at once.

The 16 GB rule here

This figure TCL does publish, and it governs the whole page: 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage.

The system takes a large share of those 16 GB. What is left free for you has to hold the apps you install, their data, their caches and the temporary space the set needs in order to download a system update.

When that margin runs out, three things happen in this order: apps take longer to open, some stop updating themselves, and eventually the television cannot apply its own update. That last one is what turns a cheap television into an old television before its time.

Which is why removing apps here is not a matter of taste about a tidy home screen. It is what decides how many years the machine will last you.

What ships on it

Google's. The launcher (com.google.android.tvlauncher), the recommendation engine (com.google.android.tvrecommendations), voice search (com.google.android.katniss) and the services (com.google.android.gms). It is the layer that decides what you see when the set comes on, and one of the ones whose data grows most over time.

TCL's. Apps carrying the com.tcl. prefix: the in-house channel, the setup assistant, the content hub. The exact names change from one firmware build to the next and between regions, so do not copy a list off the internet: ask your own set for yours.

Everybody else's. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and the rest arrive installed under a commercial agreement. On a set with 16 GB, each one you do not use is space you do not have.

What comes off without much thought

The streaming apps you do not use, and here with more reason than on the higher models in the range. They take up room, they update themselves, spending storage and bandwidth as they go, and they show up in the recommendation row. If you subscribe to one tomorrow, it reinstalls from the store in two minutes.

The manufacturer's free-content channels are the second clear case: they are there to fill the home screen.

What to look at first

The recommendation engine. Taking it out leaves the home screen clean, but it also empties the "continue watching" row, which in a house with several people is missed more than you would think.

And before you touch a single package, go into the privacy settings and look at what the set is sharing. A fair amount can be cut back from there, with no ADB and no risk at all.

What not to touch

Google Play services. They are the foundation of the store, the accounts and a good share of the apps. Without them the television boots and does very little else.

The launcher, as long as you have no other one installed and working. A set with no launcher comes on to a black screen, and fixing that with only the remote is a great deal harder than having thought about it beforehand.

And anything beginning with com.android. that you cannot name: com.android.systemui is the system interface and com.android.settings is the settings app itself.

What you actually notice

On this model, more than on the ones above it. You get space back, and that shows up as apps opening sooner and as a television that can update itself again. The home screen stops pitching series from services you do not have, and the content notifications go away.

What does not change: the 270 nits, the panel's 60 Hz, or whichever HDR your unit carries. None of that depends on the apps installed.

If the hardware is simply not enough

With 2 GB of RAM there is a ceiling no clear-out is going to get past. If the set is still slow after you have emptied it, the sensible way out is to leave it as a screen and put an external player in front of it: a mid-range one has more memory than this entire television, and it gets replaced every few years without replacing the panel, which is what you paid for.

On a television at this price that way out is not a defeat: it is probably the most profitable decision you can make with it.

Where it sits in the range

Above it is the P7K, which is QLED and does raise the brightness. Higher up, the C6K and C7K, already Mini LED with 144 Hz panels. All of them run the same Google TV, so what this page says holds for the whole range with very few changes: what separates them is the panel, not the software.

All of this comes undone

Packages disabled over ADB come back with one command, and a factory reset returns the television to exactly the state it left the box in. Nothing here touches the system: you are only telling the television not to load something that was already installed.

If you own one

The app list from your own P6K, the free space you have left and —this is the one most needed— which HDR formats your unit actually recognises is precisely what is missing to close its entry. With two or three answers from different people, this page will be able to say what the official sheets do not.
