Fire TV Omni QLED: what it ships with and what can come off

On almost every television in this directory there is a clear separation: one manufacturer makes the panel and another company puts the system on top. On the Omni QLED that separation does not exist. Amazon builds the television, the system is Amazon's and the store is Amazon's.

That does not make it worse —the panel does what its price asks of it— but it does change what you can expect from a clear-out, and it is worth knowing before you start.

This page is for someone who already has one at home.

What it is, in two lines

A 4K set with a QLED panel and zone dimming, at 60 Hz: there is no 120 here and no 144, and for gaming that is the first thing to accept. On the 50-inch model 598 nits have been measured in HDR on a 10 % window, which is enough for an ordinary room and not for one with the sun facing it.

Inside, a quad-core Amlogic at 1.9 GHz with 2.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, running Fire OS 8, which is Android 11 with Amazon's layer on top.

Three details that change with the size and that almost nobody mentions:

  • Dolby Vision is only on the 65 and 75-inch models. The 50 and 55 stop at HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
  • The sound is 10 W + 10 W on the small ones and 12 W + 12 W on the large ones.
  • Of its four HDMI ports, only one is 2.1, and that same one is the eARC port. If you connect a soundbar and a console, both want the same socket.

And mind the generation: there is a 2022 Omni QLED and a 2025 one. The first runs Fire OS 7 (Android 9) and the second Fire OS 8 (Android 11). For what concerns us here, that difference matters more than the panel.

When the manufacturer is the shop

This is what makes this television particular.

On a TCL or a Sony running Google TV, the manufacturer makes money selling you the machine and Google makes money on the home screen. Those are two different interests, and that leaves a little room. On the Omni QLED, Amazon sells the television below what it would cost to sell without the commercial side, and recovers the difference on the home screen, on subscriptions and on what you buy.

In practice, three consequences:

The home screen is more commercial than any other. That is not an impression: it is the business model.

Amazon reinstates and reactivates more than others do. What you disable can come back with a large update. It is not that the method fails; it is that you have to repeat it now and then.

The store's catalogue is smaller. If you overdo the removals, getting things back is not always as simple as on a Google TV.

The 16 GB, with 2.5 of RAM

This is not a roomy television. With 16 GB of storage and 2.5 GB of RAM, every preinstalled app you do not use is taking up space and memory you are going to need two years from now.

Here the clear-out is not only cosmetic: it is what keeps the machine usable once the apps you do use have grown fatter, which is what always ends up happening.

How to tell whether this page is about your set

Under Settings → My Fire TV → About you will find the model and the Fire OS version. With ADB connected, getprop ro.product.model gives the internal identifier, which in this family begins with AFT.

And look at the version number: if it says Fire OS 7, you have the 2022 generation; if it says Fire OS 8, the 2025 one.

What ships on it

Amazon's. The launcher (com.amazon.tv.launcher), the store (com.amazon.venezia), Prime Video and a good number of services carrying the com.amazon. prefix. On this television that is nearly everything there is.

Everybody else's. Netflix, Disney+ and the rest arrive installed, and the remote has dedicated buttons. The button stays after you remove the app; it simply stops going anywhere.

What comes off without much thought

The streaming apps you do not use, and here with more reason than elsewhere given how tight the storage is. The games and associated services that ship on it and that you have never opened.

What to look at first

Two settings remove a good share of the noise with no ADB and no risk at all: under Settings → Preferences → Privacy Settings you turn off device usage data collection and interest-based ads. Start there.

With the recommendation engine, though, adjust your expectations: on Fire TV it is woven so tightly into the home screen that you can empty rows, but not leave it blank.

What not to touch

The launcher (com.amazon.tv.launcher), as long as you have no other one installed and working. On an Amazon television this is more delicate than anywhere else: there are few alternatives and its store does not offer them.

The store (com.amazon.venezia): without it you cannot reinstall anything you remove, and here that is a one-way trip.

And everything to do with the remote and its bluetooth pairing: if the remote stops answering, recovery is uncomfortable.

Write down what you remove

On this television more than on any other. Keep the list in a text file with the full command beside each entry, and save the complete package list before you touch anything.

When an update puts the home screen back the way it shipped —and sooner or later it will— leaving it the way you had it will be a copy and paste rather than an afternoon repeating the work.

What you actually notice

A considerably less commercial home screen, storage recovered on a machine that runs tight, and less background activity.

What does not change: the 598 nits, the 60 Hz of the panel or the HDR you happen to have according to the size. None of that depends on the apps.

If the hardware falls short for you

With 2.5 GB of RAM and an entry-level Amlogic, this television is not going to be fast however much you empty it. If it still struggles after the clear-out, the reasonable way out is to leave it as a screen and put an external player in front of it, even one from Amazon itself: the hardware in its players is better than the hardware inside its televisions.

All of this comes undone

Packages disabled over ADB come back with one command, and a factory reset returns the television to the state it left the box in. Nothing here touches the system: you are only telling the set not to load something that was already installed.

If you own one

The app list from your own Omni QLED, exactly as the set reports it, is especially valuable: there are far fewer Fire TV entries about than Google TV ones, and on Amazon's own televisions fewer still. If you feel like sending it, the next person searching for this model finds the work already done.
