TCL C8L and X11L: what they ship with and what can come off

These two are the top of TCL's 2026 catalogue, and the figures they carry are enormous: up to 20,736 dimming zones and a claimed peak of 10,000 nits on the X11L. Numbers that did not exist in a domestic television five years ago.

But before anything else, a warning about something we found reading TCL's own pages, because it bears directly on what you think you are buying.

The page headline does not match the spec sheet

On TCL's European site, each C8L size has its own page. And the title of two of them announces a brightness that is not that television's:

  • The 65C8L page is titled "The Ultimate Choice with 5500nits". But its own highlights say "up to 5,000 nits", and its spec sheet says 5000nits(peak).
  • The 75C8L page is titled "with 6000nits". Its highlights say 5,500, and its sheet, 5500nits(peak).

That is: in both cases the title shows the brightness of the next size up. A one-position shift. The pages for the 55, the 85 and the 98 do agree with themselves.

We do not know whether it is a template error or a copywriting one, and it does not much matter either: what matters is that the headline you see in a search engine can hand you 500 nits too many. Trust the specifications table, never the title.

The real figures, size by size

Checked one by one on each model's spec sheet.

C8L, the one most people are weighing up:

  • 55": 1,008 zones, 3,000 nits peak.
  • 65": 2,040 zones, 5,000 nits.
  • 75": 2,584 zones, 5,500 nits.
  • 85": 3,200 zones, 6,000 nits.
  • 98": 4,032 zones, 6,000 nits.

Notice where the real jump sits: between the 55 and the 65 the zones double and the brightness climbs by two thirds. That is not the usual step between sizes; it is another television. If you are hesitating between those two diagonals, the difference goes well beyond the inches.

And there is a second detail TCL only states in the panel field: the 55-inch carries an HVA 2.0, while from the 65 upwards they carry a CSOT WHVA 2.0. Once again, the small one is the odd one out.

X11L, the flagship:

  • 75": 11,520 zones, 9,000 nits.
  • 85": 14,400 zones, 10,000 nits.
  • 98": 20,736 zones, 10,000 nits.

Here the three are consistent with each other, and the step up from the C8L is of another order: the 75-inch X11L has more than four times the zones of the 75-inch C8L.

Worth saying, though, that a 10,000-nit peak is a small-window measurement in very specific conditions. It is a real figure, but it is not the brightness you watch a film at.

The 288 Hz that are not 288 Hz

Both sheets declare the refresh rate like this: 144 Hz (VRR 48-288 Hz / DLG 288 Hz). It is worth unpacking, because in a shop it turns into "288 Hz".

The panel is 144 Hz. That is what it gives, and it is already plenty. The 288 come out of DLG, a technique that splits the image and doubles lines to refresh twice as often at the cost of vertical resolution. It is useful for competitive gaming, but it is not the television's refresh rate.

TCL, at least, labels it DLG instead of selling it as a native rate.

What TCL does not publish

This list is the same one as on the C7L, and it is still striking on televisions at this price:

Neither RAM nor storage. In no source: not the sheet, not the page, not the manual. It is the figure that decides how many years the machine lasts you, because when the storage fills up apps stop updating and in the end the television cannot apply its own update.

Nor the sound power. Both carry a Bang & Olufsen system, but nowhere does it say how many watts. On the X11L sheet the audio power field exists and is empty: it literally contains a slash, /. The cheaper models from the same house do fill it in.

Nor which port has the eARC. They confirm it is there, but not where. At least here all four ports are HDMI 2.1 —something the C7L does not clarify— so sharing them out hurts less than on other televisions.

Nor the Android version. They say "Google TV" and that is where it ends.

The memory you can find out yourself, and it is the first thing you should do. With ADB connected, df -h /data tells you how much there is and how much is left free, and cat /proc/meminfo | head -1 gives you the total memory.

What is well sorted

Both carry Wi-Fi 6, unlike the C7L of the same generation, which stayed on Wi-Fi 5. On a television that is going to pull 4K at a high bitrate, that shows.

And both accept the five HDR labels that exist: Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. The X11L adds AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.

How to tell whether this page is about your television

Under Settings → System → About you get the model and the Android version. With ADB, getprop ro.product.model gives the same without walking through menus.

The name is the same across Europe: there are no country aliases. What does change is the commercial suffix on the European energy label, where you will see a letter and a number added to the end of the model.

What ships on it

Google's part. The launcher (com.google.android.tvlauncher), the recommendations engine (com.google.android.tvrecommendations), voice search (com.google.android.katniss) and the services (com.google.android.gms). That is the layer deciding what you see when you switch the set on.

TCL's part. Its own channel apps and the odd setup assistant. The exact names change between firmware versions, so list yours instead of trusting a list off the internet.

Third parties. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and company ship installed by commercial agreement, not because the television needs them.

What comes off without much thought

The streaming apps you do not use. On a television whose storage you do not know until you go and look, each one is space you may well need. If you subscribe to one tomorrow, it reinstalls from the store in two minutes.

The free content channels that fill the home screen are the second clear case.

What to look at first

The recommendations engine. Removing it leaves the home screen clean, but it also empties the "continue watching" row, which in a household with several people gets missed.

And before touching any package, go into the privacy settings and see what the television is sharing. A fair amount can be cut back from there, with no ADB and no risk.

What not to touch

Google Play services. They are the foundation of the store, of the accounts and of a good share of the apps. Without them the television boots and little more.

The launcher, as long as you have no other one installed and working. A television with no launcher switches on to a black screen, and fixing that with the remote alone is far harder than having thought about it beforehand.

Anything starting with com.android. that you cannot identify: com.android.systemui is the system interface and com.android.settings is the settings app itself.

And anything to do with HDMI and with external device control: the eARC, the VRR and the 144 Hz all run through there, and on a television at this price they are exactly what you paid for.

What you actually notice

The home screen stops suggesting series from services you do not have. Content notifications disappear. And the television answers the remote a little sooner in the first seconds after switching on.

What does not change: the dimming zones, the nits, the HDR or the Bang & Olufsen sound. None of that depends on the apps installed.

All of this comes undone

Packages disabled over ADB come back with one command, and a factory reset returns the television to exactly the state it left the box in. Nothing here touches the system: you are only telling the set not to load something that was already installed.

If you own one

From these two what is needed is what TCL does not tell: which port has the eARC, how many watts really sound, and the output of df -h /data and of cat /proc/meminfo. With two or three replies, this page will be able to say how much memory a TCL flagship carries, which is something nobody says today.
