TCL C7L: what it ships with and what can come off

The C7L is TCL's Mini LED for 2026, and on paper it is a lot of television: up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, 2,176 dimming zones on the big model, 100% of BT.2020 claimed and sound signed by Bang & Olufsen.

And yet this page will spend a good deal of space on the opposite: on what TCL does not say about it. Because it is a surprisingly long list, and because some of those absences change how you plug it in.

The refresh rate, which turns up as three different figures

Start with the one that confuses most. Depending on which TCL document you read, this television runs at 144 Hz, at 288 or at 120.

In the technical sheet on the website, the refresh-rate field says literally 144 Hz, and adds VRR 48-288 Hz / DLG 288 Hz in brackets.

On the product page there is a block headed "288 VRR Game Accelerator" explaining that, with a 288 Hz HDMI source, the refresh rate "can be boosted up to 288 Hz". With an important asterisk underneath: that only works over HDMI ports 1 and 2.

And in the European energy label — the regulated document, the one TCL is obliged to fill in against common criteria — the field for image refresh frequency (default) says 120 Hz. On all five sizes.

We are not going to pick whichever figure sounds best. What can be stated with the sources in front of you is this: the television is labelled 144 Hz, the 288 are a line-doubling technique — that is what DLG means — and not a 288 Hz panel, and the regulated document declares 120. If you came looking for real 144 Hz for gaming, connect over HDMI 1 or 2 and check on the console itself, which is the only thing that does not depend on which brochure you have open.

And the panel, with three names

Something similar happens with the panel type, and it helps explain how these machines get documented. The technical sheet says HVA Panel. The headline on the same page says HVA 2.0 Pro Panel. And the European energy label says QLED LCD.

Three labels for the same television in three documents from the same maker. The useful one is the first: an HVA-type LCD with Mini LED backlighting, exactly what you expect at this level.

What TCL does not publish

Worth having clear before you buy, not after:

How many HDMI ports it has. The sheet lists versions — "HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1" — but never says how many there are. Its range siblings do say: the C8L and the X11L declare HDMI 2.1 × 4. The C7L, no.

Which one carries eARC. It confirms eARC, but not on which port. And since the fast ports are 1 and 2, there is a share-out there you will have to work out yourself: if your soundbar's eARC lands on one of those two, you are left with a single port for the console.

The memory. Neither RAM nor storage, in any source: not in the sheet, not on the page, not in the manual. And it is the figure that decides how many years it will last you, because once storage fills up apps stop updating and in the end the television cannot apply its own update.

The sound wattage. It carries Bang & Olufsen, Dolby Atmos and DTS, but the power field does not exist on its sheet. Cheaper models from the same house do have it: the P8L declares 2 × 10 W + 15 W. The C7L, nothing.

The Android version. It says "Google TV" and that is where it ends.

You can find all this out yourself, and it is the first thing to do. With ADB connected, df -h /data tells you how much storage there is and how much is free, and cat /proc/meminfo | head -1 gives you the total memory. The HDMI ports are counted by looking at the back.

One thing it does publish that stands out

Wi-Fi 5. On a 3,000-nit television for 2026, the wireless side is three generations old. The Bluetooth is recent, 5.4, but the Wi-Fi stopped at 802.11ac. Its C8L and X11L siblings carry Wi-Fi 6.

Not dramatic for watching series, but if the router is far away and you pull high-bitrate 4K, it is the first thing that will give you trouble. A USB to ethernet adapter costs little and settles it completely.

What it is, size by size

The dimming zones and the brightness are not the same across the range, and the difference is large:

  • 55": 800 zones, 2,700 nits peak.
  • 65": 1,152 zones, 3,000 nits.
  • 75": 1,352 zones, 3,000 nits.
  • 85": 1,624 zones, 3,000 nits.
  • 98": 2,176 zones, 3,000 nits.

The "3,000 nits" and "over 2,000 zones" headlines you will see in shops come, respectively, from the 65-inch model upwards and from the 98; TCL itself clarifies it in small print. The 55-inch is much less television than the 98, and not only in size.

In HDR it takes Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HLG and IMAX Enhanced. Curiously, plain HDR10 is not named on its sheet, though it is on its siblings'; it is almost certainly a drafting slip, since HDR10 is the base HDR10+ is built on.

How to tell whether this page is about your set

Under Settings → System → About you will find the model and the Android version. With ADB, getprop ro.product.model gives the same without wandering through menus.

Watch one detail: on the website the model is called 65C7L, but on the European energy label the identifier is 65C7LX1. The same machine with a commercial suffix. And the C7L name is the same across Europe, so there is none of the per-country reference mess other brands have.

What ships on it

Google's. The launcher (com.google.android.tvlauncher), the recommendation engine (com.google.android.tvrecommendations), voice search (com.google.android.katniss) and the services (com.google.android.gms). It is the layer that decides what you see when you switch on.

TCL's. Its own channel apps and some setup assistant. The exact names change between firmware versions, so list your own instead of trusting a list copied off the internet.

Everybody else's. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and company come installed by commercial agreement, not because the television needs them.

What comes off without much thought

The streaming apps you do not use. On a television whose storage you do not know until you look, each one is space you may well need. If you subscribe to one tomorrow, it reinstalls from the store in two minutes.

The free content channels that fill the home screen are the second clear case.

What to look at first

The recommendation engine. Removing it leaves the home screen clean, but it also empties the "continue watching" row, which in a house with several people gets missed.

And before touching any package, go into the privacy settings and look at what the television is sharing. It can be cut back a fair way from there, with no ADB and no risk at all.

What not to touch

Google Play services. They are the foundation of the store, of accounts and of most apps. Without them the television boots and little else.

The launcher, as long as you have no other one installed and working. A television with no launcher switches on to a black screen, and fixing that with the remote alone is far harder than thinking about it beforehand.

Anything starting with com.android. that you cannot identify: com.android.systemui is the system interface and com.android.settings is the settings app itself.

And on this model, with particular care, anything to do with HDMI and with external device control: that is where eARC, VRR and the acceleration of ports 1 and 2 run, which is exactly what makes this television good for gaming.

What you actually notice

The home screen stops proposing series from services you do not have. Content notifications disappear. And the television answers the remote a little sooner in the first seconds after switching on.

What does not change: the dimming zones, the nits, the HDR or the Bang & Olufsen sound. None of that depends on the installed apps, and it lives in the firmware underneath Google TV.

All of this comes undone

Packages disabled over ADB come back with one command, and a factory reset returns the television to exactly the state it left the box in. Nothing here touches the system: you are only telling the set not to load something that was already installed.

If you own one

From this television almost everything its maker leaves out is needed: how many HDMI ports it has, which one carries eARC, and the output of df -h /data and of cat /proc/meminfo. With two or three answers, this page will finally be able to say how much memory a C7L carries and how to share out its ports, which is something nobody says today, not even TCL.
