How much does cleaning up a TV actually help?

Worth setting expectations before you spend an afternoon on this. The improvement is real and it has a ceiling that depends on your hardware.
What almost always improves#
Home screen startup. The most visible one. With no recommendation rows loading from the network, returning home goes from several seconds to near instant.
Available memory. Every telemetry or advertising service you remove stops running permanently. On a 1 GB television, getting 150 MB back is a lot.
Network traffic. A clean television makes a fraction of the queries it did before. Very visible if you filter by DNS and look at the statistics.
Advertising. It disappears from the home screen, which is usually the real reason people come here.
What does not improve#
Video decoding. If your television does not support a codec in hardware, it will carry on not supporting it. No clean-up changes silicon.
Playback inside the apps. Netflix will take exactly as long to load an episode.
The panel. The picture is the picture.
What to expect by hardware#

The irony is that the worse your television is, the more you will notice the clean-up, and the tighter the hardware, the sooner you hit the ceiling.
Measuring instead of guessing#
Before and after:

Compare MemAvailable. That is the number that matters.
For app startup time:
adb shell am start -W com.example.package
It returns TotalTime in milliseconds. That is how you turn "it feels better"
into data.
The honest conclusion#
If your television has 2 GB or more and only the advertising bothers you, the clean-up will leave you happy.
If it has 1 GB and you expect it to run like day one, that is not going to happen. It will run better than now, and day one was not as good as you remember either. In that case, what genuinely transforms the device is moving the clever parts outside.
