Does using ADB void my TV warranty?
· 2 min read
This is the question that stops people, and the honest answer is: it depends, and less than you fear.
This is not legal advice.
What European law says#
In the EU, the legal guarantee of conformity runs to three years for goods bought in Spain since 1 January 2022, and it covers defects that already existed at the time of delivery.
The point that matters: the seller cannot refuse the guarantee wholesale because you touched the software. There has to be a connection between what you did and the failure.
If the panel develops dead pixels, that has nothing to do with you uninstalling Netflix. If the power supply fails, likewise.
Burden of proof#
During the first two years, the defect is presumed to have existed at delivery, and it is for the seller to prove otherwise.
After those two years the burden flips, and it falls to you to show the defect was there from the start.
Where the real risk is#
If the failure is a software one and you modified the software, the argument gets complicated. Reasonably so: the seller can argue the cause was yours.
In practice that is almost always resolved the same way: factory reset before claiming. It returns the device to its original state, and the argument goes with it.
One more reason everything we document here is reversible.
What manufacturers say#
Some mention developer options in their support terms. Worth bearing in mind that a contract term cannot remove a consumer's statutory right: they can decline commercial support, which is voluntary, but the legal guarantee is not a favour they grant.
The prudent course#
- Factory reset before taking the television to service.
- Keep the receipt.
- Do not modify firmware: we do not document it precisely because of this.
And the elephant in the room#
Most people arriving at this site have an eight or ten-year-old television. The warranty ran out a long time ago and this question is, for them, theoretical.
If yours is new, the practical answer is simple: enabling debugging and uninstalling apps for your user is reversible and does not touch firmware. The risk is low, and it disappears with a reset.
